When I was running the Lighthouse a group of students asked if they could take an AP US History course. I told them I would have expectations. They would have readings each week and we would engage in Socratic Dialogue. There were other expectations, as well. Because this was a year long course, the students were expected to engage in four inquiries throughout the year and they were expected to present their inquiry to their fellow students. My expectation was, as we moved through the assigned reading, The People’s History of the US, which was chronological, was to pick a topic, and an important individual, or a theme and explored it in depth. They covered information and topics I would never have been able to cover with them and they performed the inquiry in front of their peers, who were also learning. It was powerful and the young kids scored 4’s and 5’s on the AP Test.
