Why Acceleration Could Be a Good Fit For Gifted Students

This legislation includes language requiring districts to develop an acceleration policy.  The MDE has been promoting this practice for many years. Acceleration is a well documented practice that positively impacts the learning of gifted students.  There has been much debate in the literature and the practice of accelerating is seldom employed in classroom across the state.  Over a decade a ago, a comprehensive look at acceleration was written and published, entitled, ” A Nation Deceived A Nation Deceived: How Schools Hold Back America’s Brightest Students. It is The Templeton National Report on Acceleration, the  report which was published in 2004 and edited by Nicholas Colangelo.  The jury is in and it makes sense for many students. But it is not for all students.
